Skin prep before Christmas: why the work starts in September

The most difficult consultation of my year happens in the first week of December. Someone sits down, tells me about an event on the twentieth, and asks what I can do before then. They are not being unreasonable. They have simply been told, somewhere along the line, that skin treatments work on the same timetable as a haircut.

The honest answer is that by December the useful decisions have already been made, or they have not been made at all. Almost everything I would want to do for that person needed to start around now.

Regenerative treatment runs on the skin's timetable, not the diary's

The treatments we use to improve skin quality do not deposit a result into the skin. They give the skin a reason to produce one itself, and then the skin takes its own time about it.

Collagen is not manufactured on demand. Once it has been stimulated it is laid down and remodelled over weeks and months, which is why the visible change from a course of regenerative treatment tends to arrive well after the last appointment rather than on the way out of it. That delay is not a shortcoming of the treatment. It is the mechanism working properly.

This is the part that gets lost in how these treatments are usually marketed. Anything that changes the skin genuinely and durably changes it slowly. Anything that changes it instantly is sitting on the surface, and it will be gone by the weekend.

    Counting backwards from December

Work back from a date in the third week of December and the arithmetic is unforgiving but perfectly manageable, provided you start it in late summer.

Profhilo is typically given as two sessions about four weeks apart, and the result continues to develop for some weeks after the second. Started in September, that sits comfortably. Started in November, the second session lands too close to the date to have done its work.

Polynucleotides are usually given as a short course of around three sessions, a fortnight or so apart, and again the skin keeps responding afterwards. That is roughly six weeks of appointments before development time is even counted.

Advanced microneedling is a course rather than a single session, spaced roughly a month apart, and collagen remodelling continues for weeks after the final treatment. If texture or post-acne marking is the concern, this is the one that most needs a head start.

Homecare is the part almost everyone leaves until last, and it is the part I would start first. A medical-grade routine needs six to twelve weeks to show what it is actually doing, and tolerance to a retinoid is built gradually rather than switched on. It also carries no downtime, which makes it the safest thing to be doing in the weeks when treatment is no longer sensible.

Anti-wrinkle treatment runs on a different clock. It settles over roughly two weeks and is reviewed at two weeks, so it can be booked much later in the autumn than the regenerative work. It should never be booked into the final fortnight before an occasion, for reasons I will come to. It is a prescription-only treatment, so suitability is decided at consultation rather than in advance.

Autumn is the better window for pigment, not just a convenient one

If uneven tone is what bothers you in photographs, autumn is genuinely the right time to address it rather than simply the time that happens to precede Christmas.

Ultraviolet exposure falls, which makes pigment-directed treatment more predictable and the result easier to hold, provided daily sun protection is actually being used rather than owned. Summer pigmentation also becomes more visible around now, as the surrounding tan fades and the unevenness underneath it is revealed. That is usually what prompts the consultation in the first place.

What I will not do in the fortnight before an event

I will not perform microneedling, a meaningful peel, or an injectable treatment in the week or two before an important date.

This is not caution for its own sake. Bruising, swelling, flaking and transient redness are normal, self-limiting and entirely predictable after several of the treatments people most want before an occasion. What I cannot do is promise they will have settled by a fixed date, because that varies between people and between sessions. Nor would I introduce anyone to a treatment they have never had before with a deadline attached, because the first response to a treatment is the one you cannot anticipate.

Close to the date, the sensible options are the ones with no recovery attached. A HydraFacial five to seven days beforehand rather than the day before is a reasonable choice, and a well-established homecare routine does more for how skin photographs than most people expect.

How this fits the REGEN Method

This is the Generate stage of how we work: the in-clinic treatments that give the skin a reason to rebuild, sequenced deliberately rather than picked from a menu.

Generate is also the stage most sensitive to timing, which is why it is the one that has to be planned rather than booked reactively. It sits on top of Elevate, the prescribed homecare that does the quiet daily work, and it is followed by review appointments where the plan is adjusted according to how your skin has actually responded. A December deadline does not change that order. It only removes the room for error.

    Frequently asked questions

When should I start skin treatment for a December event?

Allow roughly twelve to sixteen weeks for regenerative treatment. For a date in mid-to-late December, that means starting in September. Homecare can start immediately and should.

Is it too late to start in November?

For a course of regenerative treatment before Christmas, largely yes. The better use of November is to establish homecare, have one well-timed treatment with no downtime, and begin the proper plan for the new year rather than compress it and be disappointed.

How long does Profhilo take to work?

It is typically given as two sessions about four weeks apart, and the result develops over the weeks that follow rather than appearing immediately. Individual results vary.

What can I safely have in the week before an occasion?

Treatments with no recovery attached. A HydraFacial around five to seven days beforehand is a common choice. I would avoid microneedling, peels and injectable treatment in that window.

Can I have anti-wrinkle treatment before Christmas?

It needs to be at least two to three weeks ahead, so that it has settled and been reviewed. It is a prescription-only treatment and requires a consultation to establish whether it is appropriate for you. See anti-wrinkle injections for how we approach it.

Will my skin actually look better by Christmas if I start now?

Most people who begin a properly sequenced plan in September see meaningful change by December. That is the pattern, not a promise, and individual results vary depending on the skin, the plan and how consistently homecare is used.

    Where to start

If there is a date in December that matters to you, the decision worth making this month is not which treatment to book. It is to have the skin assessed properly, so the plan is built backwards from that date with enough room in it.

That assessment is the Reveal Consultation. We establish what your skin is actually doing, decide what is worth treating and in what order, and set the dates so that the last appointment falls comfortably before the first party rather than the week of it.
