PRP Therapy Explained: How Your Own Biology Becomes the Treatment

In this article

Of all the treatments offered at REGEN Clinic, PRP is perhaps the one that generates the most curiosity — and occasionally the most scepticism. The idea of having blood drawn, processed, and injected back into your own skin sounds either extraordinary or alarming depending on how familiar you are with the science behind it.

The science is substantial. PRP therapy is not a fringe treatment. It is used clinically across orthopaedics, dentistry, and aesthetics, and the mechanism by which it works is straightforward once it is explained properly.

    What Is PRP?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma. Blood is composed of several components — red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma, and platelets. Platelets are the cells the body deploys when tissue is damaged. They arrive at the site of injury and release a concentrated package of growth factors — signalling proteins that instruct surrounding cells to repair, regenerate, and produce new structural tissue.

In a PRP treatment, a small volume of your own blood is drawn and placed in a centrifuge, which separates its components by density. This process concentrates the platelets into a fraction of the original plasma volume — producing a platelet-rich plasma that contains several times the normal concentration of growth factors.

That concentrated plasma is then applied to the skin — either through microinjection or in combination with microneedling — delivering a targeted stimulus for tissue repair and regeneration directly where it is needed.

    What PRP Treats

At REGEN Clinic, we use PRP for three primary applications.

For the face and neck, PRP addresses skin quality, texture, and the early signs of volume loss. The growth factors it delivers stimulate fibroblast activity and collagen production, improving skin firmness and radiance over a course of weeks to months following treatment. Clients typically notice an improvement in skin quality — rather than a single specific change — which reflects the nature of the treatment: it is a whole-tissue regenerative stimulus, not a targeted correction of one concern.

PRP is also highly effective for under-eye treatment. The under-eye area is one of the most difficult zones to treat in aesthetics because the skin is exceptionally thin and the margin for error is narrow. PRP's regenerative action is well-suited to this area precisely because it works with the tissue rather than adding to it — stimulating improvement in skin quality and circulation without the risks associated with dermal filler in a delicate zone.

For hair restoration, PRP applied to the scalp — injected into the follicle zone — has robust clinical evidence for supporting hair thickness and slowing follicle miniaturisation in early-to-moderate hair thinning. It is not a guaranteed reversal of significant hair loss, but for clients addressing thinning hair before it becomes established, it is one of the most physiologically sound interventions available.

    What to Expect

The treatment begins with a blood draw — the same small volume used routinely in any blood test. This takes a few minutes. The sample is then centrifuged while the skin is prepared. Depending on the area being treated, a topical anaesthetic may be applied to improve comfort.

The PRP is then administered. For facial treatment, this typically involves a series of small injections across the treatment zone, or the combination of microneedling to create fine channels through which the PRP is absorbed. The session takes approximately 60-75 minutes in total, including preparation.

In the hours following treatment, some redness, minor swelling, and pinpoint bruising is normal and expected. Most clients return to normal activity within 24-48 hours. The skin typically looks slightly pink for the first day or two before settling.

Results from PRP are gradual rather than immediate. The growth factors trigger a biological process that unfolds over several weeks. Most clients see meaningful improvement at four to six weeks after treatment, with continued development at three months. A course of three treatments — recommended at monthly intervals — produces more substantial and sustained results than a single session.

How PRP Fits the REGEN Method

PRP sits within the Generate pillar of the REGEN Method — the active, regenerative treatment phase where measurable change happens. It is at its most effective when the skin is prepared: a stable homecare routine using medical-grade skincare, a clear clinical picture established at Reveal consultation, and a skin barrier that is functioning well enough to support and benefit from the treatment.

For clients who are exploring regenerative options but are uncertain where to start, a Reveal consultation is the right beginning. Dr Chris will assess your skin, understand your concerns, and recommend whether PRP is appropriate — and, if so, whether it should be combined with other treatments such as polynucleotides or Profhilo for a more comprehensive result.
